SAN JUAN ISLAND GRANGE #966 RESOLUTION CONCERNING CLIMATE CHANGE

WHEREAS, the Constitution of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry declares that, “The productions of the earth are subject to the influence of natural laws, invariable and indisputable; the amount produced will consequently be in proportion to the intelligence of the producer, and success will depend upon his knowledge of the action of these laws, and the proper application of their principles”; and

WHEREAS, one natural law is the response of Earth’s climate system to the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; and

WHEREAS, the source of much of the additional carbon dioxide comes from human activities; and

WHEREAS, carbon dioxide emissions cause climate change which impacts irrigation water availability; and

WHEREAS, irrigation water availability affects farmers; and

WHEREAS, knowledge of the action of natural laws, and proper application of their principles are crucial to the success of farming and gardening, indeed of all human endeavor; and

WHEREAS, an organization that purports to lead and educate must base its work on fact;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the San Juan Island Grange #966 recognizes that human-caused climate change is an indisputable fact; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the San Juan Island Grange #966 recognizes that agriculture can and must be part of the solution to the problems of climate change; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the San Juan Island Grange #966 encourage its members to commit themselves to intelligent and creative actions to deal with the causes and effects of climate change; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that this resolution be forwarded to the next session of the Washington State Grange together with a recommendation for favorable action therein.
